about
Writing Raising Atlantis was incredibly cathartic. Tears were flowing pretty much the whole time I wrote and demoed it, which has never happened to me. I wanted to share this homemade, bedroom-recorded demo because it just feels like the truest form of the song to me - rough around the edges, raw, emotional and sparse. Thanks to the friends who encouraged and inspired me to share 🩷
lyrics
I’ve spent this cold season as a mirror
Some may wonder where I am
My retrograde waves are only whispers
but I’ve been working in the depths
Swimming in the dark
Sifting through sunken amusement parks
Staring down eight-armed creatures
From old nightmares
Waging danger there
Taming piranhas
Making a pet out of the darkness
Building a castle out of predator teeth
Ancestor shells
And broken carousels
I’ll iron out the ocean floor
And one day, I’ll raise Atlantis to the shore
Oh, the parties I throw
I sing the future to every shipwreck ghost
And teach them how to love and to dance
And then to float through the door
when it’s time to go
At the end of the night
I collect the bottles of old flame letters left behind
If it burnt bright enough while it was lit
Then there’s no such thing
As wasted ink
I’ll iron out the ocean floor
And one day, I’ll raise Atlantis to the shore
I’ve spent this cold season as a mirror
Some may wonder where I am
My retrograde waves are only whispers
but I’ve been working in the depths
Building a castle out of predator teeth
Ancestor shells
I’m getting well
Casting ancient spells
As I swim up to meet myself
And I’m staring back into the well
I see the piscean queen of shadows at the door
one day she’ll raise atlantis to the shore
